ABOUT

My name is Jonathan Ricklis. This is my portfolio.

I have a Bachelor's in Philosophy but am currently studying for a Master's in Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas.

In the interstitial period between degrees I took Computer Science courses at Texas A&M University.

I am intensely interested in web and mobile development and design. Recently I interned at Ensemble Group in Corpus Christi, working on websites and webapps using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ColdFusion and C# .NET. In my courswork I have also used C++ and Java.

Being a philosopher and an intellectually-minded Catholic, Metaphysics and Philosophy of Religion will send me into passionate and lengthy digressions, no matter the time of day. (Just ask me sometime whether I think tables exist).

I do creative writing and digital design and illustration when I have time, and I enjoy many forms of Geekery—from tech punditry to Tolkien to Doctor Who and back again.

I am currently seeking a Summer 2015 internship.

Here is my resume. Feel free to get in touch.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Here is some stuff that I worked on recently, not including my work for Ensemble Group:

This was a proposed informational site for a grant-funded upgrade of the school's scientific network infrastructure. I worked with the PI, Dr. Dulal Kar, building the site. It was decided in the end to instead use a templated page in the university's CMS to maintain aesthetic conformity.

Under Construction. A single-page personal site to help get the word out about private piano lessons.

A simple mobile app made for personal use.

Etymonline.com is a favorite of mine, but it is not a responsive website and is unusable on mobile phones.

So, I built something.

Developed with HTML/CSS and JS using Apache Cordova, a cross-platform mobile solution.

The app retrives data with a remote HTTP connection to etymonline.com, does some simple parsing to separate the title and body of each result and creates a scrollable list.

My continuing foray into Objective-C and Cocoa Touch.

This app for the iPhone is intended to be a companion app for Magic the Gathering. It allows players of the card game to track their life totals, and will eventually allow them to look up cards, rules, set a game timer, and throw digital dice.

At least it will when I find some time to play with Objective-C again…

MINI PROJECTS

A few little experiments and early work with web technologies:

A tool for making printable 60 day calendars that I created to help me track patient services at a previous job in home health.

My first website, made for my brother's wedding. There is much here that I would do differently today, but it is a nice reminder of where I began.

DESIGN & ILLUSTRATION

All the projects I have listed on this page are one-man endeavors, so I did both the coding and design for all of them.

You can see some more examples of my digital illustration/design below. Most of them were just for fun. A few of them were volunteer projects for friends and family.

"Maledict"

"Heliogog"
